MODULE 3

Pattern vs. Surface

I was tasked to digitally design and make a physical model from the terrain file of Tasmania given to me by my tutor.

CONCEPT + DESIGN

My terrain was inspired by road cycling competitions, which spans across mountainous routes. The bold arc that slices across the spine of my terrain represents the group of cyclists that stay close to each other to break the oncoming wind.

I always had the intent of designing a rhythm that oppressed the flow of the terrain to create a more thought-provoking design. My previous designs were rigid and have no sign of flow within. Hence, my final design showcases the strong bold arc across the terrain, while maintaining the flow and balance of the other areas of the terrain.

PROCESS

I was first given this terrain.

During tutorial class, I have the chance to practice how to cut the triangles.

I created some variations and these two were the better ones. I started with the terrain on the right because of the prominent divide in the center.

The process of my first design.

However, when I went to tutorial the next week, I received many bad feedbacks and was asked to improve my terrain as the terrain did not have a sense of flow. With less than a week to complete, I started experimenting a new design on Rhino and came up with my final design.

I quickly unfold everything and printed it out the next day. It took me two and a half day to complete my model as I knew how to cut and create triangles since this was my second try. It was also more organised the second round.

FINAL CHANGES

There was no comments on any changes to be made. However, I felt that I could have spent more time to reduce the gaps between the each triangles.

REFLECTION

This module taught me the fundamentals of using Rhino. I think that Rhino is a very powerful software and it is easy to learn because of the command line system it has.

During the week before the submission of my assignment, I had to redo it due to a poor design. Even though I have already started hand modelling it halfway, I had a week to buy new materials and restart. However, that had made it easier for me to start on my new model and it only took half the time I needed to complete the second one. This module has also made me realised the importance of time management and it is important to pace myself when doing the assignment, making sure to have my meals regularly. During the hand-modelling process, it is important to be organised. I bought coloured paper clips to bind the same group of triangle templates together. Overall, I think it was an enjoyable project and I had much fun cutting the shapes out.
